“It’s about half of what we usually get for this tournament. We are happy to be able to pull this off considering what we have all been through,” Midwest Youth Rugby Director Bob Cronquist explained.
The 10 varsity teams hail from Indiana (5), Wisconsin (3) and Ohio (2). Catholic Memorial, Divine Savior Holy Angels and Carroll (Chargers) will also field J.V. sides. Cronquist described the event as more of a festival, as each team will only play two games and no champion will be declared.
Nevertheless, the fact that the Midwest tournament is happening is big. The pandemic has diminished rosters, curtailed training options and increased competition for field space. And as far as rugby is concerned, 7s is an “easier” option for competition given participation numbers in relation to Covid-19 restrictions. The Midwest championship will be the first major, multi-state 15s tournament for high school girls since the pandemic began more than a year ago.
