The Utah Youth Rugby girls’ high school fall 7s season completed three rounds of regular-season play and the quarterfinals, and then the state shut down. On Nov. 8, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert declared a state of emergency due to rising Covid-19 cases and the stress it placed on medical resources. The executive order expires Nov. 23 unless otherwise modified.

Competition wise, the girls’ fall 7s season has been stellar. United and Provo have won the regular-season legs, but Wasatch and the Majestics exert good pressure on the standings leaders. Nov. 7 marked the start of the playoffs, and United and Provo earned byes through the first round. The two did play an exhibition match in the morning, and the Steelers prevailed 15-12.

During the semifinal play-ins, Wasatch shut out Brighton 54-0 and then nearly knocked off United in a 12-7 semifinal loss. The Majestics started the day with a 43-0 win against United B and then fell 33-10 to Provo in the semifinals. The championship and 3rd place games were meant to occur on Nov. 14 at Zions Bank Stadium, but the Nov. 8 executive order prevented certain, but not all, sporting events [Subsection (2)(d): Athletic and Extracurricular Social Gatherings].

“We were supposed to play Nov. 14, but our state is on a lockdown,” UYR Girls Commissioner Christine See updated via e-mail. “It would’ve been fun to play along with the Warriors Selects [in their 27-15 win against the MPD All-Stars]. The third place match was supposed to be the curtain-raiser and the championship match was going to be played at halftime. … We hope to play when the governor’s order is lifted. Knock on wood.”

Should the season be allowed to resume, then the Majestics and Wasatch will play for third, and Provo and United will play for the championship. Stay tuned.
