The majority of high school leagues contest their league seasons in the spring and begin playing as early as mid-January. Fall-based states like Wisconsin and Michigan will also be included in this listing, as there’s possibility for unofficial or 7s competitions, as will major national and regional events.

For additional updates outside of the high school realm, follow #Covid2021.

ALASKA

• Season: 7s season runs from May-August. Round robin games every Wednesday in Anchorage

• Mar 3 Update: Everything is on course to stay the same, and the academy side is traveling to Tropical 7s in early April in Orlando. Read more.

ARIZONA

• Season: Girls’ high schools play 7s in the winter/spring, and while there is a final tournament in a series, there isn’t a state championship, per se.

• Feb 11 Update: Rugby Arizona announced via Facebook that first tournament day is occurring on Feb. 20. The calendar reflects proposed game days on every subsequent Saturday (with a couple of bye weekends) through May 22.

HAWAII

• Season: Girls’ high schools play a fall 7s season, which did not happen in 2020, and a spring 15s season that begins on the winter-side of the new year.

• Mar 4 Update: Rugby is currently in a stage where practices of 10 people may occur. That’s not enough for 15s but it’s a step in a better direction.

IDAHO

• Season: West Ada holds an official, high school district-supported 7s series in the fall. Club 15s follows in the spring.

• Mar 4 update: Spring 15s will occur but Rugby Idaho is making some concessions to account for lower participation, like one-time combination of teams. Read more.

IOWA

• Season: Girls’ high schools play their championship season (7s) in the fall, which was postponed for 2020.

• Mar 3 Update: IAYRA is running the girls’ season in the spring alongside the boys’ 15s season. Season will run from April 2-May 7. State championship is May 15-16.

MICHIGAN

• Season: Girls high schools play their championship season (15s) in the fall, which was postponed in 2020. The Midwest region holds 15s and all-star championships in the spring, so some teams are playing 15s in the spring.

• Jan 25 Update: Per Rugby Michigan President Andy Dauser, he doesn’t anticipate any action until mid-April (read more):

We are clearly having the toughest time in the country to get our HS Sports up and running due to our governor’s restrictions.

MINNESOTA

• Season: Girls’ high schools play their 15s (or 7s or 10s) season in the spring

• Feb 11 Update: Spring competition is TBD but Minnesota Youth Rugby has published a “Covid Preparedness Plan” that lets teams know what they’re allowed to do as of the update. A league season hasn’t been ruled out.

NORCAL

• Season: Girls’ high schools begin their 15s season on the New Year side of the winter. Fall ’20 7s did not happen.

• Mar 3 Update: Tentatively moving toward full-contact 15s games starting in April through May. If all goes well then summer 7s will follow.

OREGON

• Season: Fall 7s, spring 10s & 15s, summer 7s.

• Mar 3 Update: “Super 6” touch season running from April 17-May 29 and all games on Saturdays. The season will be pre-empted by two coaching and refereeing modules (March 20 & 27) developed by USA Touch, and an in-person session will occur April 3 to aid in the transition to touch. Read the release in its entirety.

PENNSYLVANIA

• Season: Girls’ high schools play their 15s season in the spring. Fall ’20 7s did not contest its regular series but did hold a Fall Fest 7s tournament that Doylestown won.

• Jan. 4 Update: Girls HS will have one 15s division and one developmental division, beginning April 11 and culminating with state championships on May 15-16. Target release for schedule is Jan. 29. Read the full Rugby PA update.

SOCAL

• Season: The separate single-school season occurs between December-February and field 7s and 15s competitions. The separate high school club season follows in March-May and also fields 7s and 15s leagues. Players can play rep their high schools and club teams.

• Mar 3 Update: SoCal is moving forward with April start dates, which will vary depending on division (eg, high school boys will wait until CIS football has finished)

TEXAS

• Season: Spring 7s, tournament style, culminates with state championship

• Mar 3 Update: Two tournaments occurred in February and there are more to come. As to whether a state championship occurs, that’s still being sorted. Proper update coming shortly.

UTAH

• Season: Summer & fall 7s, spring 15s. Both 2020 7s seasons ended early and the fall championship had an unorthodox ending that may or may not be resolved before spring 15s

• Jan 24 Update: There is a big spring season meeting being held on Jan. 30, so stay tuned. Despite the amount of snow, spring 15s traditionally starts in mid-March.

WASHINGTON

• Season: Girls’ high schools play their 15s season in the spring; a developmental 10s league runs concurrently. Fall ’20 7s did not happen.

• Jan 20 Update: Aaron Lee and Lauren Barber have been appointed Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, for the interim Board of Directors. Per VC Barber:

Rugby Washington has been keeping a close eye on the guidelines from our local government and updated our Return to Play Protocols accordingly. Our skeletal plan is to have a 7-week season running from April through July. We are remaining flexible throughout this process and we are ready to adapt as things continue to change. Our ultimate goal is to have players on a rugby field again in some capacity while keeping a safe environment for our members and community.

WISCONSIN

• Season: Girls’ high school play their 15s championship season in the fall, which did not happen in 2020. There is also a spring 7s series, Wisco7s, that traditionally occurs in April-May.

• Mar 4 Update: Wisco 7s is a go. There are four stops between April 24 and June 5, as well as state all-star tryouts on May 2.
